Heggie’s warmth and unpretentiousness were in evidence during the interview; after nearly a quarter-century of success, at 62 he still exudes youthfulness and optimism. He is thrilled that his first and best-known opera, Dead Man Walking, which has received more than 70 worldwide productions since its 2000 premiere at San Francisco Opera, opens the Metropolitan Opera season on September 26—followed by the premiere of his tenth opera, Intelligence, at Houston Grand Opera on October 20.
